⚔️ 🦉 From xDai to Gnosis Chain
You’ll find the first mention of the xDai Network circa 2018. This authority- round-based sidechain network, conceived as a stable chain for P2P payments, went from an eye glimmer to a fully-fledged blockchain in a few short months (the whole back-of-a-napkin story is here).
From those early beginnings, on the backs of many accomplished builders and leveraging the first cross-chain bridge solution, the chain flourished as a dev-centric home for new ideas and experimentation. It soon outgrew the nominated-validator paradigm, and the STAKE token was introduced in 2019 to enable delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus.
This token provided governance abilities for holders to help steer the direction of the network and staking opportunities for validators and delegators in a new smart-contract-enabled consensus called POSDAO. POSDAO was successful in bringing in more users and stakeholders to the chain, and xDai chain adoption continued to grow organically as a stable, innovative, and green network.
In fall 2021, the Gnosis team and the xDai team began discussions around a token merger, where STAKE would be replaced by GNO. However, rather than being used for staking on POSDAO, a new consensus-layer beacon chain would be built in alignment with the Ethereum merge for GNO staking.
A proposal went up for vote in the GnosisDAO community and passed with wide-ranging support. The Gnosis Beacon Chain came into existence, and now stands on the precipice of 100,000 validators, the second largest validating set in the space by a wide margin.
On May 31, 2022 the token swap/merger between STAKE and GNO was officially completed and the transformation was (nearly) done! With this token merger complete, GNO is now the one-and-only governance and staking token for the Gnosis Chain! While xDai remains the transaction/gas token, the transition to GNO and Gnosis Chain is complete.
Current POSDAO validators are eagerly preparing for Gnosis Beacon Chain consensus-layer activation (ie The Merge on Gnosis Chain). This will mark the final steps 🐾 of one long adventure, and the beginning of a new one in a post-merge world!
🎈 A Week of Optimism
Optimism has been the center of attention this week with their high-profile airdrop on Ethereum. If you haven’t checked your 0x address, see if you are eligible for a claim. There are many factors and you may be in for a surprise!
While the airdrop was all the rage on mainnet, Optimism on Gnosis Chain was quietly racking up tons of usage as well, thanks to a DarkForest round by dfdao and 277dao.
Optimism on GC interest is high, look for more projects deploying on this rollup on Gnosis Chain in the near future.
