It’s been inspiring to see the outpouring of support from the crypto community this week to those who are suffering around the world. This generosity highlights an important use case for blockchain and crypto — charity and giving.
Freed of many of the issues associated with charitable organizations (high overhead, bureaucracy, corruption etc) direct giving on the blockchain is a powerful way to bring about real change.
Donations can happen extremely quickly, reaching anyone in the world within minutes. A bank account isn’t needed, and the only fees are the transaction (gas) costs. Unfortunately, high fees can significantly eat into a donation. It’s one reason why Gnosis Chain is a powerful platform for giving.
Basic transfer fees on the Gnosis Chain are extremely low (currently ~.0002 cents per tx, and even with expected growth, will remain lower than $.01 per tx). Fees are paid with xDai, resulting in stable, predictable and extremely manageable costs. A single donation goes further, and at scale the impact becomes even greater.
A Culture of Giving
This week GnosisDAO announced a 200K commitment to Gitcoin for Round 13 of their grants program. 50K goes directly to zero-knowledge research and projects, and the remaining 150K provides matching funds for projects throughout the ecosystem.
Gitcoin uses quadratic funding and other unique mechanisms to maximize donations and support public goods, and the matching funds give projects a chance to prioritize innovation over profit.
Moving forward, Gnosis chain and GnosisDAO will continue to explore ways to enhance giving-based applications, for example supporting Circles UBI (Universal Basic Income), socially-minded DAOs, and issuing grants focused on sustainability projects around the world.
While these incredible projects and many more provide the tooling, it is always up to an individual to take the next step and donate. It’s been amazing 🙏 to see so many individuals and community members step up and help support the ecosystem and the global community at large.

Those validators almost exclusively run either Prysm or Lighthouse clients. Given the importance of Prysm for Gnosis Chain, the proposal suggests rewarding the Prysmatic Labs team with 2300 GNO for their work aligning incentives with their team.
