User Agency
One way to think about technology is the extent to which it expands or contracts the agency of the user. User agency is the capacity to influence the social world. Technology always plays a role in how we, as human beings, communicate with one another and act upon the world. We shape technology and it, in turn, shapes us. It’s a feedback loop. A hammer, a wheel, a nail, a computer, a phone. The built environment around us is a product of the way these tools are employed and the outcome of our collective efforts to act upon the world. The built environment also shapes how we interact with each other.
User agency, in part, rests on this awareness of how technology shapes thought and action. Yet, it also critically rests on an active decision to design technology with this awareness in mind. Technology can damage users when power dynamics favor the privileged. On a blockchain network, when transactions are censored the agency of the user is diminished. Even if the censored transaction is eventually included in block production, the agency of all users are curtailed by the preferential treatment.
Gnosis has always built tooling for the Ethereum ecosystem with user agency in mind. Follow the bread crumbs of all the products that Gnosis has incubated and it leads to user agency. It’s why Gnosis Chain is called the community-run chain and why credible neutrality is a central feature.
